Talk Title: Science Mapping: Why it Matters and What You Should Know
Abstract: This talk will provide a history of science mapping and on the types of things that can be learned from science mapping. It will also provide recent examples related to accuracy and validation of maps, and will conclude with a brief tutorial on the general science mapping process.
Kevin Boyack serves as president of SciTech Strategies, Inc.; a small U.S. company that pursues research in a variety of topics in scientometrics. Currently he is a visiting researcher at Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) of Leiden University in the Netherlands, through May 2017. His interests include detailed mapping of the structure and dynamics of science, technology, and altruism; accuracy of mapped structures; merging of multiple data types and sources; identification and prediction of emerging topics and development of advanced metrics. Kevin received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Brigham Young University in Utah, and spent many years at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico working on traditional engineering topics before becoming a scientometrics researcher.
